Last month, Pathlight Runners participated in The Straits Times Run 2018. With over 10,000 participants, it was a good exposure to mass running events and an opportunity for our runners to integrate with the community. Our runners forged close bonds as they encouraged one another to persevere through the 5km run. In the process, they learnt values of excellence, teamwork, respect and friendship. It was also a good opportunity for them to give back to the community as proceeds from the run went to the Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund to help children from low-income families.
Discovery Day 2018 was held last week for our Primary One Standard and Primary Two students to pique their interest and curiosity in science. Parents had the opportunity to work with their children and showcase their projects, which focused on science-related skills of observing, comparing, and classifying. Our students enjoyed the experiential learning through the projects showcased, including making their own paper butterflies utilising the science of chromatography. They also made lanterns made out of materials taught about during Discovery lessons It was a memorable day for Pathlight’s little scientists! Thank you parents for your wonderful project ideas and in for making Discovery Day a successful one!
Our Primary 1 Foundation students were recently taught the basics and importance of hand hygiene by a team of doctors and nurses from Ang Mo Kio Polyclinic. The students had fun going through the steps in hand washing, as well as checking their hand hygiene standard under a UV light machine. Thank you Ang Mo Kio Polyclinic for reaching out to our students to help them start good health habits at a young age!
As a form of encouragement to their Primary 6 seniors who are taking their PSLE, our Primary School Student Councillors packed and distributed care packages to them.
An initiative started by the Student Councillors in 2017, this tradition has continued. The Student Councillors led all Primary 3 to Primary 5 students in the project by getting them to write encouraging messages to their seniors and putting together a video montage that was showcased during the distribution of the welfare packs itself.
Kudos to all our Primary 3 to 5 students for living out our Pathlight’s values of compassion and contribution!
All the best to the Primary 6 students taking PSLE! You can do it!
Last month, our Secondary 2 Students went on a trip to the historically and culturally rich city of Melaka. Part of our Project One initiative, the trip aimed to develop students holistically in the aesthetic, physical, socio-emotional, moral and cognitive areas.
The highlight of the trip was the visit to a traditional Malay Kampung where students got to immerse themselves in traditional folkways, such as the traditional Malay dance and Batik painting. Many students even got to try Peranakan cuisine for the first time. Not only that, they also visited the Agriculture farm and man-made swiftlet cave where they had the opportunity to witness organic farming and bird nest cultivation.
All in all, students learned to appreciate cultural, economic and social diversity, as well as the norms and differences of others. The trip was truly one that broadened the mind!
Recently, our Primary 3 students went on a Science Learning Journey to the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum. There, they learned about the diverse groups of life forms. It was a great opportunity for our students to observe, compare, and classify different plant and animal groups based on what they have learned in class. Their learning experience was also further enriched through a guided tour and a simple activity guidebook. It certainly was an eye-opening trip for all involved.
Recently, our Secondary 3 students participated in a Community Involvement Project at Sunlove Home, a Daycare Centre for dementia patients. As part of the Life Readiness Curriculum and the school’s emphasis on the 5C values, the visit aimed to reinforce two of the 5C values of ‘Compassion’ and ‘Contribution’. Our students had a hand in planning the activities and they interacted with the residents through fun activities such as Bingo, workouts and simple games to improve their skills and dexterity. It was a meaningful project for them and the visit truly reinforced in our students the values of compassion, respect, patience and care towards the community’s elderly.
Last Sunday, Pathlight Runners participated in the Running Hour 2018, a national event aimed at promoting integration through mainstream sports. Our runners ran alongside runners with visual, hearing, intellectual and physical challenges. It was an insightful experience as the 3.5km run included a challenging yet fun “empathy run” segment where they got to experience the hurdles faced by different groups of people with special needs. Our runners also got to contribute back to the community as they supported the visually impaired runners. It truly was a call for everyone to come together and nurture an inclusive Singapore through sports!
As part of Pathlight’s Project One initiative, our Secondary 3 cohort attended a 2-Day/1-Night camp at MOE Dairy Farm Outdoor Adventure Learning Centre last week. Aimed at developing students in the aesthetic, physical, socio-emotional, moral and cognitive areas, the camp instilled in our students confidence and resilience through a series of purposefully planned activities, which focused on outdoor adventure training, team building and self-reflection. Many of them even overcame their fear by completing challenges such as the rope course, rock climbing as well as night hike. Through this camp, friendship and teamwork were strengthened as students actively worked together to achieve team goals while learning to respond to challenges positively and persevere in the face of setbacks.
Our students from the Vocational Track had their Day Camp last Friday. As part of our Project One initiative, the Day Camp aimed to develop students holistically in the aesthetic, physical, socio-emotional, moral and cognitive areas.
Themed “Work Hard, Play Hard”, this year’s camp introduced students to leisure activities that they could engage in outside of school. Students went to various locations around Singapore for trampoline jumping, ice skating or laser tag, before ending the day with a movie, Hotel Transylvania 3. Through the camp, students learned to work in teams, improved their hand-eye coordination and practised managing money. It was definitely a day well spent!
Pathlight School is the first autism-focused school in Singapore to offer the national curriculum together with life readiness skills. It caters to students on the autism spectrum with related conditions, aged 7 to 18 years, who are cognitively able to access national curriculum but require additional support such as smaller class sizes, special accommodations and teaching staff trained in autism.
