On 22 June, 18 students from our Secondary 1 and 2 cohorts participated in the Fuel Your School – STEM @ Central Singapore ‘Land Speeder’ competition organised by the Central Singapore Community Development Council and Chevron Singapore. This competition was part of the Fuel Your School – STEM @ Central Singapore annual enrichment programme that aims to spark interest and encourage students to pursue their passion in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.  

Students were challenged to design their very own prototypes of Land Speeder, like the ones seen in Star Wars movies. The goal was to levitate the Land Speeder across a 1-meter track through the application of magnetism principles.

Our students were grouped into four teams – Chengalara, DJ Sky, Major Intel and Unknown, and competed with other participating secondary schools. Through this competition, students learnt about the concepts of magnetism, sensory technology, electronic and mechanical engineering, while having fun building their prototypes. They also demonstrated teamwork and problem-solving skills when facing difficulties in the project.

As part of the competition, the Land Speeders of participating teams were also put up on Facebook and Youtube for public to vote on their favourites. Teams that garnered the most votes stand to win attractive prizes. Team Chengalara with their Land Speeder, ‘People’s Flash Air’, won the 2nd prize in the ‘Most Impressive Project’ category and also achieved top 10 in the ‘Most Popular Project’ category! Their Land Speeder was also among the top teams that levitated across the 1-meter track on the first attempt.
